Costa Rica fishing report by Allan Smith – Crocodile Bay Resort, Costa Rica – June 22, 2017 – I have always been amazed with the Ocean. Something so big, so permanent, yet constantly changing. The tides, the currents, the weather and of course the unpredictability of the creatures within. Every time you think you have it figured out, she throws you a curve ball. Such was the case the with the fishing at the end of May and early June. The blue water moved out beyond sixty miles and the offshore bite almost slowed to a standstill. But fortunately, what the ocean takes with one hand, she usually gives with the other, and so, as things slowed offshore, the inshore bite began heating up.

Last week, we were joined by the Fox family from California. They got into some nice Roosterfish action, including a fifteen fish day and landed a triple.

Presently we have the Hankins group, three generations of fisherman from Florida. They hit the Roosterfish hard their first day and finished up with a nice snapper for dinner. Yesterday they went deep drop fishing and got some grouper, snapper and a tile fish.

The Swenson family had their first day yesterday and all five caught Roosterfish. On their fishing report, they made the comment “I never expected our group to catch so many fish so quickly”. The action was not only limited to the gulf. We even had a couple of groups catch Roosterfish from our pier in the evening, before dinner.

Though it has been a little slow, the news from offshore is encouraging. Better water has moved in, there are lots of flying fish, birds and schools of porpoise. It shouldn’t be long before the game-fish move back in. July is historically a good month for Marlin (including blacks and stripers in the mix) and with better water and bait, the fishing offshore should be back up to speed shortly.
