Crocodile Bay Resort – Costa Rica Fishing Report
Greetings from the Tropics – September 2019 Fishing Report
This month I wanted to do something a little different and touch on some of the new equipment we have coming for our 2019/20 season. On the lure front, we have some great Yo Zuri Bull poppers and Halco Roosta poppers coming in. Both of these poppers have proven effective on the tuna and are even capable of attracting the lure-shy roosterfish. We are updating our casting plugs with some of the Sebile Slim Puncher, and the Bull Minnow lures. The Slim Puncher is a versatile lure that is very realistic and suspends in the water when you stop it. The Bull Minnows are weighted in three different configurations: floating, sinking and rocket sinking. With a quick change of the lure, you can easily fish any part of the water column that you like.
Marlin and tuna enthusiast will be glad to hear that we are outfitting our roomy Strike boats with the new Black Magic fighting harnesses and fighting belts. This is one of the best fish fighting systems on the market and makes putting maximum pressure on big fish a breeze. Using your legs instead of your arms and back to fight the fish means more power, increased stamina, and no lower back pain. We are very excited to offer these to our guest, and I hope to get out and “field test” one myself.
In the fly fishing department, we are updating our offshore fly rods with some of the new Temple Fork Outfitter Bluewater SG rods. We will have them available in 10/12wt, 13/15wt and even a 16+ weight flyrod for those explicitly seeking marlin on the fly.
Though terminal tackle may not be the most exciting thing to talk about, it is worth mentioning that we have a large number of circle hooks, bait hooks, swivels, snap swivels and 4X treble hooks coming from Eagle Claw. Their tournament approved circle hooks are an industry standard, and we are happy to continue providing them to our guests and using them in our tournaments.
Finally, I would like to mention that we have several great products coming from Boone Bait Company (including their famous Boone Birds, planers, Mac Jet lures, and Needlefish jigs). We are outfitting all our boats with Boone insulated cooler bags. These highly insulated professional quality “kill” bags can accommodate multiple big fish (tuna up to 63′) and keep your fish ice cold. We know you work hard to land your catch and it is important to us that when your fish gets to the kitchen, it is cold and remains in sushi-grade condition.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Allan Smith
