Crocodile Bay Resort – Costa Rica Fishing Report

Catch all the action from last month – Watch the April 2019 Crocodile Bay Resort highlight reel!

Greetings from the Tropics – April 2019 Fishing Report

The action in April has been great! As I mentioned in the March fishing report, we sometimes get a run of marlin in mid-April and this year we were not disappointed. Large numbers of baby dorado moved onto the current lines offshore and with them came the marlin and a nice concentration of sailfish. Several boats were posting double-digit raises on the colorful sailfish and the powerful marlin in a single day.
The tuna were here in abundance early in the month but slowed after a couple weeks. Probably with all the marlin out there, they decided to move for safer waters.
We had the pleasure of hosting Jim Grandt and his annual tournament. This is a six-day, six boats, twelve angler tournament for Sailfish, Tuna and Roosters. It was a great group of veteran anglers, most of whom, have been fishing together for years. I would like to congratulate Russell Jensen for winning the tournament that went down to the very last day. Russell is an IGFA world record holder, author and a heck of a nice guy. Congratulations Russell!
As good as the offshore fishing has been, the real story this month was the Rooster fishing. April was some of the most consistent action of the year, with most of our boats landing between three to eight roosters a day. During the tournament, there were over fifty roosters released in six days and several trophy fish in the forty to fifty-pound class.
May is usually a transition month as we move out of the dry season. The Roosterfish action should continue and historically we start to see more tuna offshore. As we move from the high season,  into the summer months, there is plenty of good fishing ahead.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Allan Smith
