Crocodile Bay Fishing Report for December 2023
Watch our December highlights video below.
As we close the year of 2023, I would like to start by saying thank you to all of our anglers for a spectacular year, and a huge thank you for making us one of the best sportfishing destinations in the world. Our home on the Osa Peninsula is well known for the biodiversity of its rainforests and for its abundant sea life (and amazing fishing), which keeps getting healthier due to Costa Rica’s great marine life protection laws.
This past month demonstrated that Crocodile Bay is becoming a top destination for saltwater fly fishing as well. December brings in Sailfish to our Costa Rican waters. The sailfish started to show up in great numbers all month, but the highlight of the month has to be the fly-fishing action at Crocodile Bay.
Fly fishing for billfish or pelagic species is a big challenge but is not impossible.
Our crews are experienced and knowledgeable in fly fishing and they can walk you through the steps to successfully catch your dream fish on the fly.
We had a true fly-fishing enthusiast fishing with us in December, Mr. Marc Pipas ,who was able to land his dream dorado on the fly!
The yellow fin tuna fishery here in the Osa Peninsula is by far becoming one of the best yellowfin fishing action in the world.
Landing them on the fly is a huge accomplishment, which was the case for Mr. Salinas who arrived at Crocodile Bay with the goal of fly fishing for tuna. He certainly succeeded.
The image on the left shows Mr. Salinas and his son with two rooster fish, which they also caught during their fishing adventures.
Last but not least, I would like to mention the Phillips group, an avid angling family, who maintain their strong family bond by going on fishing adventures together.
They were able to experience fly fishing with us and had a blast landing sailfish, dorado, tuna and blue marlin offshore on the fly, as well as a few big roosterfish and some massive cubera snappers inshore.
They told me that they were able to experience one of the best fishing adventures they have ever had with us!
In the month of December our anglers landed loads of fish, inshore and offshore. The hottest fishing of the month was the dorado (mahi-mahi) bite.
Usually, the dorado season runs from September until the second week of November, but this year (due to the favorable conditions and healthier marine life around the Osa Peninsula), our anglers had the opportunity to land double digits every day on dorado all month long!
It is a major adrenaline rush finding huge schools of dorado, who attack your spread, and hooking up doubles or even triples at the same time.
December also always brings blue marlin action and our captains were able to spot some good currents with bait fish, allowing our anglers to hook up good numbers of blue marlin ranging between 200 and 400 lbs.
January is always great for billfish offshore and huge roosterfish inshore so if you want to experience one of the best fishing destinations in the world, give us a call and let us show you how effortlessly we can set up your dream fishing adventure.
See you in paradise,
Diego Camacho
