BioSur Foundation in Costa Rica and Jim Córdoba-Alfaro

BioSur Foundation in Costa Rica and Jim Córdoba-Alfaro

Jim is an accomplished field entomologist, conservationist, and community leader focused on the Osa Peninsula rainforest. He is the founder and president of Biosur Foundation, a grassroots NGO that promotes rainforest conservation, scientific research, and environmental education. Jim’s mission is to bring awareness about the urgency to conserve and protect the last tropical rainforest remnant left in the Pacific of Central America. Additionally, Jim is the curator of the Insectopia Museum, an insect collection with over 8,000 specimens that will be used in partnership with Botánika Osa Peninsula, Curio Collection by Hilton and Crocodile Bay to open the first Environmental Education Center on the Osa Peninsula.

Crocodile Bay has been supporting BioSur and Jim’s efforts for several years, by providing BioSur a safe and air-conditioned space to do their insect research work, as well as exhibit and store their extensive insect collection.

The future plan for BioSur and Jim is to provide them with an even larger space within the new Crocodile Bay Village to host the Insectopia Museum, which will be open for visitors to admire the preserved insects up close and learn about them and the eco-system they live in.

Watch a video below on BioSur and Jim’s efforts.

Jim is the author of several international publications and has discovered more than 30 species of insects and 2 new mammals and co-authored the most complex wildlife field guide in Costa Rica: the Animals of Costa Rica app. He has appeared and contributed to several international documentaries. Jim is also currently President of Lands for Biological Diversity, a US-based 501(c)3 NGO that aims to acquire, protect, restore and conserve natural areas containing endangered and threatened flora and fauna on the last tropical forest in the Pacific of Central America.

Jim’s right-hand man Eddier Blanco is BioSur’s Excecutive Director, completes their efforts with focusing on environmental education of the younger generations. Eddier is a social anthropologist and professor of history and geography and graduated from the University of Costa Rica. His great affinity for the environment and his understanding that climate change is a large threat to humanity, brought him to be the current executive director and project coordinator of the BioSur Foundation. As an environmental educator, the strategy that he implements impacts children and adolescents through the development of environmental education programs on various topics that ensure their training as future generations.
